Sunriver Police Department UAs (Drone)
Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Program
Since March 2022, the Sunriver Police Department has utilized Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, to support public safety operations. UAS technology helps improve community and responder safety, enhances situational awareness, and assists in emergency response efforts.
The use of drones is governed by Sunriver Police Department policy, Oregon law, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. All operations are conducted with respect for constitutional protections and individual privacy rights.
Authorized Operators
The department currently maintains a certified UAS operator and program manager. Operators are required to hold an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, complete department training, and comply with all applicable laws and policies. Ongoing training is conducted through regional UAS programs in Central Oregon.
Permitted Uses
Drones may be used for:
- Emergency response and search-and-rescue operations
- Criminal investigations when authorized by Oregon law
- Crime scene and accident scene documentation
- Court-authorized operations
- Training exercises
- Situations where property owner consent has been obtained
Restricted Uses
The Sunriver Police Department does not use drones for:
- Random or generalized surveillance
- Discriminatory targeting or profiling
- Harassment or intimidation
- Personal or non-department business
- Any activity that interferes with manned aircraft operations
Accountability and Records
Only trained and authorized personnel may operate department drones. All flights are documented and reported annually to the Oregon Department of Aviation. Evidence collected through UAS operations is securely stored and managed in accordance with Oregon records retention laws and department policy.
